Hayfield & Castleton Round (26/08/2017)

We had an excellent walk (in my biased opinion as its leader) . We got a very warm day, which we felt on the climb to the top around Kinder Low but by the time we reached Brown Knoll plateau and the new paved path, it became cooler. From there we joined the Great Ridge path and gradually more and more other hikers (including a group who recognised us from previous walks). Half way descending to Castleton from the top of Lose Hill, a Polish group coming up the other way asked us how far it was to the summit, in response to which I reassuringly said “Only ten minutes!”. At the time though, I happened to have just been thinking enthusiastically of how long it had taken us to come down. It was unclear if they understood Steve’s added comment that this time would only be if they ran up it.

Actually the "we" of this report means just the four - or excluding myself the three - and at one stage going down a footpath from the Mam Tor road where the others momentarily disappeared out of sight, the two.

I know people have curiously wondered whether any official LDWA South Manchester record exists for the highest number of members lost during a walk, but what about the numbers lost before a walk? During the last walk I led I think there were about 20 so this could be a good claim including which in the hours leading up to this latest walk I also had two non-members wanting to come who did not.

Doubtless competition from the glorious Bank Holiday weekend explains it. Despite this the walk, which I was told turned out to be 20 (not 19) miles and 4,000 feet of ascent, was, in my biased opinion, very healthy and exhilarating.
