To the Land of the Rising Sun (24/05/2017) - EW

An easy two hours around Hazel Grove. Aha, read on. Firstly a walk up Buxton Road, that’s right, the bypass first stage had just opened, and we wandered up what was once a heaving mass of cars and stone lorries. Amazing. A short walk along the stream and more ‘road walking’, this time along the closed Middlewood Road. Safety barriers were being fitted and we had another fun packed short walk, where once you had to use the concessionary path. Across the railway line, and onto the Middlewood Way. Here the fun really started.

Our intrepid leader had gaily announced that it was a simple route with everything being recently recced. It turned out that recent actually meant some 60 years ago, and the group spent the next 25 minutes wandering blindly around Jacksons Brick Works. The wiser ones gave up and detoured along the canal; the rest followed shortly after! However, the riveting stories of Quentin on his track bike, hopefully made up for his navigational errors. Dave G and Bess left us here to do some P&N recce work and the remainder legged it back to the start and a pint. Don waved goodbye as we passed his short cut home; don’t leave it as long Don, it’s always good to see you. Only 40 minutes later than advertised, not bad, and hopefully an enjoyable night. Thanks for support.
