Leaving the pretty market town of Reeth we headed down to the river (Swale) and along its north bank for a shortwhile, before heading north-west via Healaugh to the well known Surrender Bridge.  This whole area has a strong lead mining heritage and the relics and remnants of this former industrial activity are dotted around the otherwise fabulous scenery - blighted by it some might think but nevertheless full of character and genuine historic interest (not to mention the origin of the many tracks we were on).  We continued climbing to Level House Bridge before turning west and scrambling down Bunton Hush towards Gunnerside Beck, and leading eventually to Gunnerside where we took our lunch.

Our afternoon was spent south of the river, initially following its bank eastwards before heading south east and climbing Whitaside Moor and then dropping down Apedale Road to Dent’s Houses.  One final climb northwards and we soon found ourselves dropping down into Grinton, before heading back along the river again, across the “new” suspension bridge and back into Reeth.

Decent weather (dry), good company and contrasting scenery either side of the river - and thoroughly enjoyed by all (the “walk of all walks” someone said).  Many thanks to our leader for expertly guiding us around such an interesting route.
