Ripon Rowel (Day 1) | Saturday 24 March 2018

The Ripon Rowel – A Walk of Two Halves
(Walk Leaders: Jon & Wendy Leete)

Saturday – West Tanfield to Sawley - the weather never did turn out quite what it said it would – lucky for us – all 12.  Striding out with great enthusiasm we left West Tanfield heading south along the River Ure  (the principal river of Wensleydale) until as far as Bishop Monkton when we turned west having passed/passing through some typical local villages of Ripon/Harrogate district.  Turning north we skirted around the early 14 century moated medieval manor house, Markenfield Hall, built in British gothic architecture.  The first day was a relatively flat day.  However, a walk wouldn’ t be a good walk if there wasn’t a hill in there somewhere along the way.  Our hills were a sting in the tail…..right at the very end - on reaching the very popular grounds of Studley Royal Park and eventually on to Sawley.
