'Wimpole'
Sat 20th May 2017
Walk Details:
After Lonica’s successful walk from Royston to Cambridge in March, this is a second chance to see the large mansion of Wimpole Hall. A longish walk west of Ermine Street with a mid-morning break, and a shorter walk east of Ermine Street in the afternoon, returning to Royston by 1800; 20 miles. Chiefly open and gently rolling countryside with some pretty villages and extensive views.
Through Royston, where James I signed Raleigh’s execution warrant, and out via Litlington, Abington Pigotts, and Croydon (!) to the 3,000 acres of the Wimpole Hall Estate. If the Group wishes, there will be time to visit the Hall – National Trust members please bring your NT membership card – there is a small exhibition inside explaining the connection between Philip Yorke and John Soane.
Back via the long broad avenue south of the Hall, crossing the River Cam for the second time, and thence via Whaddon direct to Royston Station.
