London LDWA

Is this some sort of record? asks leader Susanne Waldschmidt of the 2020 New Year's Hangover Buster. An impressive thirty-six walkers turned up at the Monument to enjoy a tour of Roman walls, pass 40 City churches, admire various works of art strewn along the way and manage not to get lost while tramping up and down alleyways. Many thanks to Susanne for her scholarship, and here's to a record-beating New Year's Day 2021.

On to what's on offer this week. Once again Ron Wiliamson comes up trumps with one of his excellent pop-ups, this one on Friday. It's his annual trip to the seaside, with the chance to top up that suntan while following the Thames to the briny around Shoeburyness.  Allegedly, it's largely mud-free, which is more than can be said for yesterday's Stansted Stagger; those of us London Group members who took part returned home with considerable clumps of Essex's finest on our boots. Meanwhile, this Sunday's hike - lyrically named Winterhurst - visits some of the nicest parts of Kent, iincluding Goudhurst and Penshurst, where a pub stop can be had. Happy walking!
