London LDWA

Dear All

How are the new year resolutions going?   I do hope those pledges to drink less, exercise more and eat healthily are holding up well!   But if they aren't, then London LDWA can definitely assist with the second, although our affinity for Wetherspoons might not be exactly helpful for the first (or the last, come to think of it, if you are fan of the Curry Night Special).

Our first calorie-burning opportunity comes on Friday when our renowned pop-up specialist, Ron, will be leading a daytime midweek walk featuring sea, sun and sand - a very bracing combination for this time of year!   His expedition convenes at Pitsea station at 10.15 on Friday morning and promises "invigorating breezes" - which seem rather more likely than the "sun" which also features in the walk title.

Then on Sunday, we have laid on for you a splendid sojourn to sunny Selbourne, which lays claim to being the home of Gilbert White, a famous naturalist.   Christopher's 15 mile walk will be meeting at Liss station at 09.23 on Sunday morning, and completes a circular route, making use of the Hangers Way to lead us from start to finish.   Christopher warns us to expect some mud en route so unless a week of iron-hard frost precedes the walk, which seems  a bit unlikely in Hampshire, you will want to make sure you have chosen your footwear appropriately.

Now, casting our eyes slightly further afield..

Fuerteventura mountain

The view from Pico de la Zarza in Fuerteventura last week
A surprisingly excellent walking destination

I've been fortunate enough to spend the last couple of weeks on Fuerteventura - one of the Canary Islands.   At this time of year, the weather makes an excellent change from the unremitting grey of London and despite its image as a resort desitnation mostly for dedicated sun-worshippers, it offers some surprisingly good walking.   And the GR131 long distance path goes right past the hotel front door.

But that’s everything for now - see you all back on terra firma next week

Adam
