As the odds on a white Christmas fall as fast as the temperature, and as a national emergency is declared while three millimeters of snow blankets Surrey, now's the just the time to start planning your weekly warming leg-stretcher with London LDWA.
And this week, despite the chill, we have two excellent walks laid on for you.
First up, on Wednesday, Ian will be leading a fascinating-sounding "Dome-to-Dock" walk in the Thames' eastern reaches. His excursion convenes at North Greenwich Underground Station at 18.00 on Wednesday evening and explores the Thames riverbank and the Isle of Dogs to finish up at Canary Wharf and the tube back home. Canary Wharf on a dark winter evening is always a spectacular sight, so this is surely an outing not to be missed.

Then, rounding off the week's programme, on Saturday, Keith will be giving us the opportunity to complete an entire long distance path - albeit a shorter one - in just one day. The path in question is the Thames Down Link (not a satellite receiving station, by the way) and in what seems to have become something of a tradition amongst LDWA London walk leaders lately, he will be walking it backwards. Yes, contrary to "Strider", the walk starts at Kingston station at 09.10 on Satruday, and finishes at Dorking, rather than the other way round. With a vineyard and a Wetherspoons thrown in, this sounds like a fine way to combine exercise with festive spirit. If you're planning on coming along, please note that as well as reversing the route, there is a strong recommendation to bring sandwiches and also a torch, as it is likely to be dark at the end,

UPDATE 18/11 Note the route has been REVERSED and now runs from Kingston to Dorking, not the other way round as advertised in Strider. Revised details: Meet at Kingston Station 09:10 (London Waterloo 08:42). The lunch stop is the same but bring your own food is strongly recommended as the pub could be very busy. Please bring a torch

Meet Kingston Station (London Waterloo 08:42). Finish Dorking station NOTE ROUTE IS REVERSED COMPARED TO DETAILS BELOW: The route passes through Denbies Vineyard, Norbury Park, Mickleham and onto Stane Street where we join the Thames Down Link. After lunch at Stamford Green, Epsom Common (9.5 miles), the Link takes us through Horton Country Park Old Malden and Berrylands to finish at Kingston and an optional visit to the nearby Wetherspoons (well it is Christmas)
