London LDWA

Hello everyone!

Yes, - hard to believe but it's true.   It's Monday again.  Always incredible that it can come round so fast, but not to worry, we have, as ever, an excellent programme of walks laid on for you this week.

But before we get too carried away, let's have one of those Important Notices first:

The Silk River Project and London LDWA

In the Strider you received recently you will hopefully have enjoyed and perhaps been intrigued by our Chair Peter Aylmer's article on the "Silk River" project on page 5.  This is a community based project, with London and India partnering to organise a series of riverside walks in mid-September.

You will find details of the walks along the Thames at http://www.silkriver.co.uk/uk-walks/; information about the walks in India is on the same website.

The walks listed there are aimed at the general public rather than the experienced walkers that are reading this email. If you would like to take part in rather longer walks and help to carry the brightly painted 6 metre flags (on 7 metre fishing rods) then the full schedule is on our London LDWA website at https://www.ldwa.org.uk/London/W/4662/2017.html

If joining one or more of these walks appeals to you then please contact Gordon Parker at silkriver@ldwa.org.uk. If you do that there is no need to book for each of the local walks: Gordon can make a block booking on your behalf.

Finally, to find out the background to the project and to whet your appetite, have a look at this inspiring 36 minute film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX4yfDhJjmE .

So now let's move on to this week's events.

On Wednesday evening, we will be making a return visit to Hampstead Heath, this time led by Charles.   Although Susanne was frequenting similar parts last week, the Heath is a big place, so I'm sure there will be lots of new sights and routes along the way.   To join Charles' expedition, just be at Hampstead Tube (Northern Line, Edgware Branch), Heath Street Entrance, at 18.00 on Wednesday.

Then on Saturday, Neil is laying on a 23-miler, taking us from that lovely shopping megalopolis at Bluewater, to the even lovelier bucolic surroundings of Otford, in Kent.   His route takes us along the Thames Path, and then down the Darenth Valley, with at least two refreshment stops along the way.   This promises to be an absolute belter of a walk, and especially since, as I am sure you all know, Otford houses the largest model of the solar system in the world (yes, really - click here ).   So if you'd like to join this walk exploring two rivers and nine planets (or is it eight now?), be at Greenhithe station at 10.00 on Saturday.

Well, that's pretty much all for now.   Except for one small point - last week's photo competition.   Well I obviously stunned you all into silence, since I got only one response - and that was from someone who had inside information(!).   So the vast and glorious prize will yet again go un-won.   Which is a bit of a relief actually as I hadn't quite decided what it was going to be.  Yes - the location of last week's photo was in fact the gorgeous Herbert's Hole, just outside Chesham.   Well worth a visit one day!

So have a great week!
