Hello everyone!
Mondays seem to come around so fast, don't they?
Well now that we're well into the spring season, we've got two excellent walks lined up for you this week.
First of all, on Wednesday evening, Alan is taking us on a visit to Beverley Brook. And no, Beverley isn't a B-list soap opera star, it's actually a rather lovely tributary of the Thames, running through Richmond Park. If you'd like to join this excursion, make your way to New Malden Railway station for 18.20 on Wednesday evening. But please note, at the time of writing, there are rumours that the RMT maybe holding another strike (sigh) on Wednesday, so please check timetables before setting out. Also, it may be getting dark towards the end of the walk, so you might want to bring a torch.
And then, second, on Saturday, Don is leading a rather special walk in memory of Kathy Loraso. For those of you who didn't know Kathy, she was a stalwart of our group who sadly passed away last year, so this walk will be seeking out some of her favourite stamping grounds in the North Downs. It also follows part of the route of our annual "Founders'" challenge hike, so if you would like to join Don in his exploration of a particularly delightful corner of Surrey, just make your way to Chilworth station for 10:00 on Saturday morning.
But before you go.. If you have signed up for the "curry and comets" weekend in November, I'll be contacting you in the next week or so for payment. And if you haven't signed up yet, or thought you would be too late, well your luck is in. I've just had a couple of cancellations so there are now a limited number of spaces available if you'd like to come. You can find out more by clicking here. And if you want to go, just let me know by replying to this email, or to me direct at london.walks@ldwa.org.uk
The November weekend visits the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux and if the weather is decent, we'll get a look through one of the telescopes. Although some of the bigger telescopes were moved to the Canary Islands a few years ago, it should still be an interesting and stimulating visit, which also takes in the nearby Castle.
I was actually fortunate enough to visit La Palma in the Canaries last week, on a walking holiday which took us up to the crater rim where the telescopes are sited. The blue stuff in the photo below gives an indication of why the telescope was moved from Sussex to the Canaries. And if you ever get the chance to go to La Palma, do take it - it's great for adventurous hiking and good weather. Similar in almost every respect to the north Pennines in February, actually.

Well, that's enough armchair-travelling for now. Back to work, but don't forget to put this week's walks in your diaries, and to let me know if you'd like to come on the weekend away in November.
All the details are, as ever, at the bottom of this note.
Cheers
Adam
