Hello everyone!
Yes, it's Monday again but no need for the beginning of week blues! We've got a couple of great walks - and a plug for the late Summer - to brighten the start to your week.
Coming up first, on Tuesday, Ron is leading a midweek, mid-day "pop up" walk (i.e. it doesn't appear in "Strider") for those lucky enough not to be chained to the office desk. Ron's walk meets at 10.40 at Hatfield Peverel station and heads off into deepest Essex, in the general direction of Maldon (where the salt comes from). So if you'd rather be enjoying fresh air than London fumes, Ron's 12 mile leg-stretch could be just what you're looking for.
LDWA London's last visit to the Maldon salt factory. Note the practical headgear worn in case of adverse weather conditions. Not sure if it's Goretex though.
But if you can't escape midweek, all is not lost! Because on Saturday, Jenny is going to be exploring the hills and commons of Godalming and its environs. This sounds like another great day out, taking in some favourite spots including Winkworth arboretum and Hambledon, the latter, according to Wikipedia, being famous for having no dual carriageways and no railways. So if this sounds like your idea of rural bliss, just hop on the train from Waterloo and get yourself to Godalming for 09.01 on Saturday morning.
And there's more!
Now, while I've got your attention, I'd like to promote another weekend away that LDWA London is laying on for you this summer. Last week I was extolling the virtues of Godfrey's weekend away to the Lakes in June (click here for details) and now it's the turn of Lonica's weekend away to Derbyshire in September (click here for details). So read on...
Weekend away to Derbyshire in September
Now that spring has arrived and Easter is past perhaps your thoughts are turning to where you might go for a weekend away.
Well there are still places available for the September weekend in the White Peaks, so if you fancy 4 great walks in this lovely area please do contact Lonica and book up you accommodation.
The weekend away section on the website (click here) has full details but here is a summary as a taster.
The walks.
Friday 9 September. 18 miles. Matlock to Hartington via Winster, Birchover, Gratton Dale and Long Dale.
Saturday 10 September. 20 miles. Harting circular via Milldale, Dove Dale, Illam Hall (lunch at NT cafe), Wetton (pub for drinks) and Hulme End.
Sunday 11 September. 21 miles. Hartington circular via Lathkill Dale, Over Haddon (lunch), Sheldon, Flagg and Pomeroy.
Monday 12 September. 20 miles. Hartington to Matlock via Youlgreave (lunch), Stanton Moor and Rowsley.
The plan is to take a train up Friday morning. Currently there is a 7.52am train from St Pancras on Fridays arriving at Matlock at 10.27am. We would then walk to Hartington; walking back on Monday to catch the train at around 18.36 arriving in London at 21.01. Train times will be updated nearer the time.
We will stay in Hartington for 3 nights. Book your own accommodation – either at the YHA on the group membership card or in B&B you identify yourself.
If you are interested, please contact Lonica Vanclay on Lonica.Vanclay@outlook.com
So that's all for now.
All the details of this week's walks are, as ever, below.
Have a great week
