London LDWA

Hello everyone

Well it's a bit of a blockbuster week for London LDWA this week.

Not only do we have a fantastic set of walks for you to enjoy, but also this week sees the launch of our much- vaunted competition.

Turning first to our walks.

On Wednesday, Jerome is leading us on a "Park Perambulation" round Richmond Park which promises to offer not just the usual sights, but some of the less commonly seen ones, too. If you'd like to go, be at Norbiton station at 6pm.

Then on Saturday, we've got what is billed as "Social walks in Surrey". This simple title belies the fact that these are in fact the Marshals' hikes for the Founders' Challenge, which of course is happening the weekend after.

The arrangements for the Marshals' hikes have changed considerably compared to "Strider", so it's really important to read the walk details on the web, and reproduced below, very carefully.

  • We're offering two walks on Saturday, checking out, respectively, the 16 and the 27 mile Founders' routes
  • The start arrangements for the two walks are different.
  • The 16 mile starts at 09.53 at Gomshall station,
  • The 27 mile starts at 08.41 at Dorking station.
  • The 27 mile walk will start with a car transfer to Steers' Field, about 3 miles away.
  • If you're coming on the 27 mile walk, it's essential that you email the walk leader, Douglas Robinson (by email at london@ldwa.org.uk) in advance and let him know if you would like a lift to the start, or if you would be able to offer a lift.
  • The details at the bottom of this email have all the info you need, plus some other important logistical notes, so please take a minute to read it carefully.

The Competition

Phew!
After all that I think we need a bit of light relief, so here it comes.

Well, one of our longstanding members, Susanne, noticed that when you're out hiking, you often see signs along the way that are doubtless supposed to be helpful, but which actually aren't.

I'm sure we have all come across some of these for time to time so we've decided to have a bit of a competition to see who can come up with the most confusing, unhelpful or amusing sign that they have spotted whilst out walking.

So now's the time to start dredging through your digital archives, or getting out there and starting snapping, and coming out with your best examples.

If you send your photos to me (london.walks@ldwa.org.uk) I will post your entries on the website and then we will have a vote of all members to choose the best.

The competition will run for about three weeks, till midnight on Sunday 11 October. Then we'll spend a week voting and I'll announce the winner in my email of Monday 19 October.

This all sounds fantastically complicated but I am sure it will work on the day(!).

And, to make it all worthwhile, there will be a fabulous prize of a £25 wine voucher on offer for the winner (there will be a non-alcoholic alternative too).

And to get you started, below are three examples that Susanne and I have picked up in our travels recently. And I'm sure you can come up with some much better ones!

All points of the compass..

 A bit lacking in detail..

So can you or can't you?

OK so can I walk here or not?

Every whichway!

 Which way is up?

Well after that epic, I think it's time to stop, and wish you all a great week hiking, or in the office, or both.

As ever, the details of all this week's walks are below, and please, in particular, read the details of the Marshals' hike on Saturday particularly carefully.

Cheers!
Adam
