Isle of Wight LDWA Group

The IOW LDWA Group was re-formed in April 2013 after a seventeen-year lapse. Led by Ventnor author and former Royal Navy Warrant Officer David ‘Rowdy’ Yates (originally from Waltham St Lawrence, in Berkshire).
David had previously led several long distance walks, following the 2009 publication of his second book Beaches Bars and Blisters of the Isle of Wight. His first book Bomb Alley has become one of the top-selling accounts of the Falklands War. David has now walked round the Island nineteen times. Also a keen runner, in 2012 he set out to see how fast he could run and walk round the Island’s 73-mile coastal footpath. Achieving a time of 16 hours and 23 minutes, he was some way off the reputed record time of 13 hours and 55 minutes.
The IOW LDWA is a friendly, expanding group and seeks to combine longer distance walking with sightseeing and a chance to meet like-minded people. A wide variety of coastal and inland walks have now been established to attract walkers of all ages. Distances from 10 to 73 miles are covered, and a 24 hour round-the-island walk is programmed each year for the same day (and direction) as the Round the Island Yacht Race. Most of the walks are quite casual, with lots of beaches and bars. Other walks leave less time for making sandcastles, and may incur some blisters! Most walks are circular, but some are linear. Lunch stops are usually taken at a pub or café. Various forms of public and private transport are used. Social events and occasional weekends away on the mainland are also organised.
It is not mandatory to be a LDWA member to join any initial walks. However, you are expected to join the LDWA if you eventually wish to become a full or associate member of the group. LDWA Membership costs about £13 a year, and not only allows you to join (and support) the IOW Group, but also opens up access to a multitude of other groups and walks around the country.
Membership of the IOW LDWA also entitles you to some amazing discounts in Blacks, Goodyears Outdoors, Kitted Out (Ryde) and Isle of Wight Pearl – who all give 10% discount of all items in their stores. So this means that your annual membership can easily be reimbursed! New contacts are automatically included in our e-mailing list unless you let us know otherwise, and contacts can opt out from receiving e-mails at any time.
We look forward to walking with you.
