Doddle West

Doddle West - Sunday 21st October 2018

The rescheduled Doddle West will go ahead on Sunday 21st October 2018.

All entries for the Doddle West have now been transferred to the 21st October.  If you wish to take part in the event on the 21st October, you need do nothing further apart from turn up on the day

This walk complements the long-established Dorset Doddle.

The route goes along the coast path from Charmouth to West Bexington, the South Dorset Ridgeway from West Bexington to the Hardy Monument, and a route past Maiden Castle to Dorchester. The route is about 26 miles long with the Coast Path diversions that are currently in place. You will go over Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England at 627 feet high, and Thorncombe Beacon, pass through scenic West Bay, the setting for the TV series Broadchurch, walk the ancient Ridgeway to the Hardy Monument, pass Maiden Castle, the largest hillfort in Britain, and end up in Prince Charles' model town of Poundbury. Follow this link to see a gallery of photos from along the route. There is a continuing issue with cliff falls, particularly to the east of West Bay, so there may be very late alterations to the route. You will be advised of any last minute changes at the start of the walk.

We will lay on coaches from Dorchester to Charmouth on the morning of the event at a cost of £8.00 in addition to the event entry fee. Coach details on the confirmation e-mail. Registration will be in Charmouth from 7:30 am, to start any time between 8 and 8:30am.

The entry fee is £7 for LDWA members and £14 for non-members.
Coach Transfer: £8.00

Entries re now open and will close on Sunday 7th October.

Electronic entry at SIEntries.

Entry includes food at checkpoints, hot food at the finish, and a certificate for all finishers. Closing date for entries is midnight on October 7th 2018.

For postal entries and enquiries please e-mail Chris Pitt: No route descriptions will be sent out before the event but will be available to be downloaded from this site two weeks before the event. Note the possbility of last minute route changes if there is a cliff fall on the route.

 Event Information

The event starts between 8am and 8:30am (runners at 8:30am). The start and registration will be at the St Andrews Community Hall (GR SY365935) in Lower Sea Lane, Charmouth. This is just round the corner from the Lower Sea Lane car park (GR SY364934) in Charmouth - that's the car park at the top of the road not the one down by the beach - which is where the coach will drop you off. Registration opens at 7:30am and you can leave any time between 8 and 8:30am after you have been scanned out. The coaches from Dorchester to Charmouth leave from Mansell Square in Poundbury (GR SY677904). There is free car parking all over Poundbury, but to avoid congestion and friction with the locals, you will be advised of a preferred parking place before the event. The first coach will leave after 7:15am when it is full, and the last coach will leave at 7:30am.

The finish will be at the Brownsword Hall (GR SY678902) in Poundbury.

There is a 10 hour time limit for the event, so you need to finish before 6:30pm. Sunset is at 6:05pm.

The maps covering the entire route are Explorer 116 and OL15 (or Landranger 193 and 194). We only require you to carry a map (paper or electronic) covering the route from Bridport to Dorchester (OL15 or LR194) as the first part of the route is along the well-marked coast path. There will be indoor checkpoints at Burton Bradstock (9 miles) and Portesham (18 miles) which will offer drinks and food. A meal will be provided at the finish. Entrants should bring their own mug for drinks, and it is recommended that you carry a water container. A certificate will be given to all finishers.

1   Entrants agree to be bound by the rules; in all circumstances event officials’ decisions are final.

2   Minimum age for entrants is 16. Entrants below 18 must obtain parent’s consent and other conditions may apply.

3   The maximum time limit is 10 hours (last finish 6:30pm) and checkpoint closing times will be enforced.

4   Entrants must follow the prescribed route (without mechanical assistance) and ensure their arrival at checkpoints is noted by marshals.

5   Dogs are not allowed

6   Entrants who are inadequately equipped according to the prevailing conditions will be disqualified. Entrants should therefore carry waterproofs, warm clothing, spare food, drink, mug and personal first aid items. All entrants must carry a paper or electronic map covering the route between West Bay (Bridport) and Dorchester, as well as a compass, whistle and the route description.

7   Entry fee less a £3 admin fee will be refunded for cancellations prior to midnight on 7th October 2018.

Can I get back from Dorchester to Charmouth at the end of the walk? Probably not. The bus timetables for October 2018 have not been announced, but it is unlikely that there will be a suitable bus on Sundays.

What happens if I retire? Please retire at a checkpoint. We will provide transport from all checkpoints to the finish, but you may have to wait until the checkpoint closes. If you retire somewhere other than a checkpoint, please let us know so we know that you have retired. We will not leave you stranded.

Do you take runners? Yes. Please remember THIS IS NOT A RACE and you will need to adhere to the checkpoint opening times.

Will you (Dorset LDWA) transport bags from the start to the finish? No. You have to take them with you on the walk.
