LOCOMOTING IN LUNEDALE - 9.5.10

THE GROUP

Leader Jim reports:

The walk started with six members and four guests from Newbiggin-on-Lune and soon joined the disused Tebay to Darlington railway, now a well known nature trail. Apart from two small diversions the railway was followed to Kirkby Stephen where the C2C was crossed at Greenriggs Farm. Eventually the route of the disused Penrith to Darlington railway was picked up for a short distance until it was left near Soulby.

After passing through Soulby the River Eden lead the group into Warcop where little used paths lead to a crossing of the Settle to Carlisle line and an easy climb onto Crosby Garrett fell via Newclose lane. The 22 miles was concluded by traversing the fell to Bents Farm and the cars thence to the Black Swan in Ravenstonedale for refreshments.
