A ROUND ABOVE KENDAL - 25.4.10

SCOUT SCAR.

Sadly the brilliant weather of the previous few days broke just in time for the start of Joan’s fine walk. Notwithstanding this a laudable fourteen left the Station inn above Oxenholme in rain to climb the Helm. The numbers were largely due to our nine visitors who were from as far apart as Scarborough, Lancashire and Barrow. Happily the rain soon eased and the remainder of the day was spent in relatively mild though grey conditions with just an occasional shower.

The route proceeded via Natland and Sizergh Castle onto Scout Scar where a short break for coffee was taken at the summit mushroom. Onwards over Cunliffe Scar the Dales way was eventually joined at Burneside and followed for a short while until lunchtime on a private but deserted golf course. Secretive paths took the group upwards and past the twin jewels of Potter Tarn and Gurnal Dubs before a long descent and traverse crossing the A6 followed by the final climb of the day onto Benson Knott.

All that was left was a quiet road section back to the start to complete the 25 mile circuit. Guests were bade good bye and the few remaining group members enjoyed a swift drink before departing after another good outing.
