HELM WIND WALK - 4.6.17

 A COMPACT GROUP

On a bright sunny but windy morning six members gathered at Garrigill for the 08.30 start.

Andy Armstrong lead the walk with Pat and Dave Evans, Clare, Martyn and Angela in attendance. Walking anti clockwise we arrived at Greg’s hut after 6.5 miles where a break was taken and the visitors' book signed and it was during this first part of the walk that we encountered the only shower of the day.

In a  further 1.25 miles we arrived at Cross Fell summit where views were good but a strong cold wind hurried us on to Little and Great Dunfell.

Lunch was had after dropping down for shelter on the track into Troutbeck before following it down to the  confluence with the River Tees. Not long after this we came to the sculpture marking  the start of the river South Tyne which was followed downstream to Ashgill where a slight diversion was made to view Ashgill Force - not much water on offer due to the recent dry spell of weather.

Then following route instructions a high level route was taken with plenty of stiles (just what you need at the end of the day!) before dropping down into Garrigill to finish.

Statistics Start 08.30 Finish 17.00. Mileage 21.3, Ascent 3,452ft.
