ROAMING ROUND THE WALL - 19.4.09

WENDY ON THE WALL

Leader Frank reports as follows –

After leaving Cumbria’s blue skies we arrived at Northumberland’s Greenhead to be met with light mist, low cloud and a chill in the air. This quickly dispersed as six members and three visitors set away at 8.30am, soon warming up on the first section through fields, road and tracks on the way to Haltwhistle. Continuation was through more farms, fields and moorland with a quick break at Cranberry Brow.

Next up was the Roman fort of Vindolanda and the course of a Roman road at Stangate on the way to Limekiln. We lunched before entering the famous Housesteads fort at the twelve mile mark.

It was a hard ten mile return over the crags which included the highest point on the wall at Windshields Crags. Although there were a few stops to regroup and take photos no one in this tough group took the easier routes below the tops!

The weather could not have been better in which to enjoy such a good nine hour walk with the finish unsurprisingly in the usual place i.e. local pub!
