MARYPORT RAMBLE

1.PRE START

10.12.06                                                MARYPORT RAMBLE

We can’t say there was no warning. For days the weather forecast had promised high winds and driving rain – it wasn’t wrong! Even so five of us set off in the pre-dawn gloom with local boy, Ron, to see us off (I’d love to come but the poor old dog wouldn’t get round).
The Allerdale Ramble was more of an Allerdale mudslide but we persevered past Cockermouth to enjoy a dry if un-entertaining lunch under the bypass at the halfway point. Resolve faltered after more riverside plodging and a dash was made by road to the bus shelter at Great Broughton hence straight back to Maryport and chez Ron’s for welcome soup and sarnies.
Commiserations to Derek who had devised a fascinating and unusual route unfortunately cut short. On the day 17 miles and 6 hours was more than enough – we will return to visit Flimby’s strand.
