AGM WALK - 30.10.11

ON BLENCATHRA'S SLOPES

A fine though breezy and cloudy day greeted the starters for this year’s walk prior to the AGM. Nine members were joined by four guests as we walked up the track to Bowscale Tarn and thence up the steep path onto Bowscale Fell. After regrouping we traversed across to Bannerdale Crags enjoying fine views east into the valley. Descending to the Glenderamackin col we chose the small meandering path which, after a sheltered break for coffee, eventually took us to the exquisitely located Scales Tarn.

Sharp Edge was cloud free so a decision was made to split the group with eight going for the scramble and the remainder taking the ‘Voie Normale’ to Blencathra’s summit.

In the event the rock was unpleasantly greasy and slippery in places so three wisely turned back while the foolhardy remainder enjoyed a somewhat exciting journey across the Edge and up aptly named Foule Crag.

Eventually reunited on a now misty summit we proceeded via the boggy Mungrisdale Common to lunch for the second year in a row at remote Skiddaw House. Time constraints precluded any further summit attempts so the afternoon was pleasantly spent ambling along the good path and track by the side of the River Caldew. A final break was taken at the fine pool at the road end before returning to the start after a journey of some 16 miles in time to change and travel to Caldbeck for the meeting.
