The Brendon Incline

A Challenge Walk by Cornwall and Devon Group.

Saturday 17th August 2019

This popular event has returned and will be held in 2019.

On again by popular request.  Another chance to explore the beauty and magic of Exmoor and the Brendon Hills. A choice of 2 routes both of which offer stunning views and big hills. The Brendon Hills particularly are so beautiful but quiet and rarely explored by walkers.

Start:    Moorland Hall, Wheddon Cross, Minehead, TA24 7DL.   GR SS 924 387

There is limited parking provision at the hall. Park on the recreation ground opposite as directed by Marshalls. This availability is to be confirmed. Check this website before travelling for any changes. Anyone coming be camper van. Please contact the organiser.

Route 1.   33 miles. 6600 ft ascent including the Brendon Incline which is a disused railway 3272 ft long at a constant 1:4 gradient.

Start: Walkers 07.00. Runners 08.30. All to finish by 19.00.

This is a tough walk. There will be a cut off time at a mid walk checkpoint. Failure to get there in time will mean transfer to Route 2.

Note that this is a slightly amended route to the previous event and some checkpoints will be different.

Route 2.   25 miles 4900 ft ascent.

Start Walkers 08.00. Runners 08.30.  All to finish by 19.00.  This route may be shorter but it is still a tough walk.

Note that unlike the previous event this walk starts and finishes at Wheddon Cross and avoids the need to climb the Incline.

Food: Tea, coffee, toast etc will provided at the base before starting and a light hot meal will be provided at the finish.

All en route checkpoints will be outdoors. Cold drinks and some food will be provided but entrants are advised to bring their own provisions to supplement that at checkpoints and for emergency use.  Bring a MUG. None will be available at checkpoints. If you have done this event before please note that their will less food available this time.

Runners: We welcome runners. However the checkpoint opening times are based on a fastest pace of 4.25 mph, which is slightly quicker the fastest runner on the previous event and shows how hard this route is. And this time the route is slightly longer.

If you get to checkpoints before they are open, please wait. Do not just go on otherwise you will become a “missing entrant” and this will result in the organisers taking emergency action.
