An Up & Down Day

Wheres the sun we were promised

An Up and Down Day - Saturday 17th February

Once again we had a good turnout for our monthly social walk “An Up & Down Day”. 16 of us set off from Newgate Bank layby, walking south along the road towards Helmsley.  We turned off to follow the track to Oscar Farm then onto Acre Grain Planation.

Whilst walking through the Planation we were very fortunate to see a small herd of Roe Deer, about 8 of them, mature and young offspring.

Further on in the Planation we came across Woodsmen felling trees on the steep bankside, progress was held up for a short while until it was safe for us to pass.  It was a steep pull to the top of the bank, but soon over.  We then crossed several fields, we had our first break in Riccal Dale Woods before dropping down the steep bank to an area where the paths converge in Riccal Dale, part of the Tabular Hills walk.  We then climbed steeply uphill through Hasty Bank Farm to reach Pindesdale Howl.

After quite a long walk along tarmac we reached Aldergate Bank, but thick mist over Sleightholme Dale hid the impressive views.  We had lunch at Rollingdale Bank on the trackside, and then dropped down to the moor at Hagg Common.

Onto Lund Church, the Group took the opportunity here to look round this very small, but impressive church.  All that was left then was for us to follow the long track back to the finish via Rievaulx Bank, in weak sunshine, which had been promised for earlier in the day.

Thanks to everyone who came on the walk.  Hope you enjoyed it.

Albert.
