Reccing the Hundred


The North York Moors is quite a remote part of the world with little in the way of public transport, however Pickering provides a convenient base to recce NYM 100 and you can use public transport as much as possible. Below is a suggested way how you might recce the NYM 100 staying Pickering and using public transport as much as possible. Please note you will need to a local taxi service or shuttle cars to do some of the Legs. The NYM 100 can be completed in 6 Legs, with longest Leg being no more than 20 miles.

Leg 1: Malton to Wombleton (19 miles)

Roadside parking is available in Pickering near the roundabout or you can use one of the long stay car parks. Use the Coastliner 840 bus service from Pickering (from the Royal Oak near the roundabout) to Malton. Walk from the centre of Malton to the School and then follow the route to Wombleton. Use the Scarborough and District 128 bus service to get back to Pickering. You will have completed stages 1, 2 & 3.

Leg 2: Wombleton to the Lion Inn (17.5 miles)

You will need to use a local Taxi service (or two cars) for this Leg. You could also stay at the Lion Inn and combine this Leg with the 3rd Leg. Roadside parking is available in Wombleton. Follow the route from Wombleton to the Lion Inn and take a Taxi back to Wombleton. You will have completed stages 4, 5 and half of Stage 6.

Leg 3: The Lion Inn to Sleights (17.5 miles)

You will need to use a local Taxi service (or two cars), if you park or are staying in Pickering to do this Leg. From Pickering drive or take a Taxi to the Lion Inn - which is half way through stage 6. Follow the route from the Lion Inn to Sleights and take the Coastliner 840 bus service back to Pickering. From Pickering drive back to the Lion to pick your car up. Alternatively if car shuttling drive from Sleights drive back to the Lion Inn to pick your other car up. You will now have completed the other half of stage 6 and stages 7 & 8.

Leg 4: Sleights to Goathland (20 miles)

Park in Goathland. Take the Coastliner 840 bus to Sleights and follow the route back to Goathland. You will now have completed stage 9, 10 11 & 12.

Leg 5: Goathland to Thornton-le-Dale (17 miles)

Park in Thornton-le-Dale and take the Coastliner 840 Bus service to Goathland. Follow the route back to Thornton-le-Dale. You will now have completed stages 13, 14 & 15.

Leg 6: Thornton-le-Dale to Malton School (11 miles)

Park in Thornton-le-Dale and walk from Thornton-le-Dale to Malton School and the Finish. Walk back into Malton town centre to catch the Coastliner 840 bus service back to Thornton-le-Dale. You will have completed stage 16 & 17 and finished the walk.
