Route & Route Description: Not available until 2017

We do have a route finalised for the event, with a route description written and with all checkpoints in place.

We know all of you interested in our 2017 100 would like to see the route and route description as soon as possible. We apologise that we will not be making these public until 2017.

This is for a number of reasons:

  • Conservation: Much of the North York Moors is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is a nationally important breeding area for moorland birds including merlin, golden plver, snipe, curlew, redshank, whinchat, ring ouzel, hen harrier, peregrine and short-eared owl. The populations of breeding merlin and golden plover are of international importance and for these two species the NYM is designated a Special Protection Area (SPA). We need to have our route description double checked and triple checked before publication to ensure that we guide you accurately over the correct route and minimise the possibility of disturbing the wildlife.
  • Private Land: Some of the route will be on private land with landowner’s permission. While the landowner has granted us permission to cross their land for the Marshal’s and Main events we do not want to upset them with people recceing the route many months beforehand, as they might then withdraw their permission.
  • Shooting: Some of the route is across grouse moors, and, because this is open access land, can be subject to days of closure for shooting in late summer and autumn. While most of the route is on Rights of Way, which cannot be closed, we still do not recommend crossing moorland during shooting. (Within the North Yorkshire LDWA team views on grouse shooting are mixed, but we all realise that without grouse shooting, heather moorland would not be economically viable, and we would lose the NYM’s uniquely large expanse of heather to sheep or forestry if the shooting stopped).

We will let you know when the route and route description will be available in due course, but this will not be until 2017.

In the meantime we can confirm the OS maps you need for the route are:

Explorer: 300, OL26, OL27

Landranger: 94, 100
