INFORMATION FOR RECCE OF THE ROUTE
 
For those wishing to recce the route of the Red Rose 100 in several stages using a car one way and public transport the other we offer the following information. If you wish you can use public transport both ways for all these sections. Please research your journeys via the links below. The information is valid regarding times as of 10th July 2014 and may alter, so please research in full before travelling. The times of buses and trains are based on the weekday timetable. The frequency of buses and trains may be different or in some cases non existent at the weekend.
 
If you wish to undertake the recces in larger or smaller sections or ditch the car and use public transport both ways as mentioned above, we have compiled  a list of how to get to most checkpoints by public transport. There are also some villages like Sawley and Newton that are on the route and have bus routes that pass through them.

1. RIVINGTON ( FOR ANDERTON CENTRE HQ) TO RAMSGREAVE.  22 MILES
Park car in car park next to Rivington Primary School (GR SD626144) . Start walk from the car park in Para 1.2.
Finish this section at the end of Para 3.7 before Pettyfoot bridge (GR SD 686320).
Turn right on road and go under railway bridge to T junction. Turn right to traffic lights at Bulls Head.  Turn right and Ramsgreave and Wilpshire railway station is on your right. ( 5 minute walk)
Take train to Bolton and walk to Bolton  bus station which is next to Bolton market ( 5 minute walk)
Catch number 125 bus at stand U at Bolton Bus station. The bus goes to Preston.
Get off bus at Bolton Road in Anderton just after M61 motorway bridge. From bus stop cross over main road and turn left. In 100yds take 1st right into Shawe Drive which turns into a path. Straight up and over motorway foot bridge. Path ends opposite entrance to event HQ Anderton Centre. Cross road and turn left. Take next right turn down Horrobin Lane.. Over dam wall and back to car park.( 20 minute walk)
 
 
2. RAMSGREAVE TO  DOWNHAM.  17 MILES
Park car outside or near  Downham village hall. Take number 7 bus which stops outside the  village church to Clitheroe bus interchange. Take the train to Ramsgreave and Wilpshire station. Leave platform and turn left onto main road. At Traffic lights by the Bulls Head  turn left and in about 100 yards turn first  left into Knowsley Road. Under under railway bridge and rejoin route at the start of Para 3.8  just before Pettyfoot bridge.( 5 minute walk).( GR SD 686320)
Walk to Downham village hall.
 
  
3. DOWNHAM TO DUNSOP BRIDGE. 22 MILES
Park car at Dunsop Bridge pay and display car park ( GR SD660502). Take number 10 bus which stops outside the village post office to Clitheroe bus interchange. Here take the number 7 bus from stand 3 to Downham church and rejoin the route at Para 6.1.
Walk to Dunsop Bridge car park.
 
 
4.DUNSOP BRIDGE TO HURST GREEN. 16 MILES
Park outside or near Hurst Green Village Hall and turn left on road to war memorial. Go onto Longridge Road and turn right. The bus stop is on the opposite side of the road to the Shireburn Arms ( 5 minute walk) ( GR SD685378) . Take number 5 or 5A bus to  to Clitheroe bus interchange. Take the number 10 bus from stand 3 to the post office in  Dunsop Bridge and rejoin route at Para 9.7. ( GR SD660502)
Walk to Hurst Green Village hall.
 
 
5. HURST GREEN TO RIVINGTON ( FOR ANDERTON CENTRE HQ) 23.5 MILES
Park car in car park by Rivington Primary School (as in section 1 GR SD 626144)) and take the final part of the100 route to turn left onto Horrobin Lane and over dam wall. At the end of Horrobin Lane turn left to the  Anderton Centre. Cross the main road and  take the path immediately opposite. Go along this path over the motorway  foot bridge and into Shawe Drive. Turn left onto Bolton Road and take the number 125 bus to Bolton town centre. ( 20 minute walk.)  In Bolton walk to the railway station ( 5 minute walk) and take the train to Clitheroe. At the Clitheroe bus interchange  take the number  5 or  5A bus from stand 5 to Hurst Green . Rejoin the route by the Shireburn Arms at Para 12.1.( GR SD685378)
Walk to the Rivington Bowling club in Para 15.7 and cross Horrobin Lane to the car park. ( GR SD626144) 
 
 
 
HOW TO GET TO CHECKPOINTS BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT  -  PLEASE NOTE  THIS IS A SELECTION  AND NOT A FULL COMPREHENSIVE LIST
 
 
RIVINGTON ( FOR ANDERTON CENTRE HQ) : 20 minute walk to Bolton Road in Anderton .125 bus  ( Bolton to Preston route) runs every 10 minutes from 8.00am to 6.00pm
 
SLIPPER LOWE: Buses 38 and 223 go from respectively, Belmont to Darwen and Belmont to Blackburn, both via Tockholes Road. Frequency: two a day and one a day respectively. Neither confrimed. (Travel line Blackburn-Darwen Rural Link)
 
FENISCLIFFE: Buses for Blackburn town centre stop on main road near entrance to Witton Park or 20 minute walk to Blackburn town centre.
 
WHALLEY: Trains stop that go to Clitheroe, Bolton and Blackburn ( Clitheroe to Manchester Victoria Line). Local buses also go to Blackburn and Clitheroe.
 
BARLEY: Number 7 bus goes to Clitheroe. ( Clitheroe to Nelson  route)
 
DOWNHAM: Number 7 bus goes to Clitheroe. ( Clitheroe to Nelson route)
 
BOLTON BY BOWLAND: NONE
 
TOSSIDE: The number 11 bus goes from Settle (and Horton in Ribblesdale) to Tosside Monday to Saturday three times a day including winter. (Dalesbus booklet) Confirmed.
 
SLAIDBURN: Number 2 bus goes to Clitheroe. ( Hodder Valley Circular route) Note early finish times.
 
DUNSOP BRIDGE: Number 10 bus goes to Clitheroe ( Hodder Valley Circular Route) Note early finish times.
 
CHIPPING: Number 5 and 5A bus goes to Clitheroe. ( Clitheroe to Chipping route)
 
HURST GREEN: Number 5 and 5A bus goes to Clitheroe. ( Clitheroe to Chipping route.
 
MELLOR BROOK:  Number 15 bus  from  the Feildens Arms which is near Mellor Brook Village Hall to Blackburn. ( Mellor Brook to Blackburn route). Also number 280 bus from the Feildens Arms (Preston to Skipton route) and stops in Clitheroe.
 
HOGHTON : Number 152 bus goes to Blackburn ( Preston to Burnley route)
 
BRINSCALL : Number 24 bus goes to Blackburn.( Chorley to Blackburn route)
 
 
ACCOMMODATION BASE IDEAS FOR THE RECCES
 
Clitheroe is a good central point with excellent public transport links. Blackburn and  Bolton also have good public transport links and plenty of accommodation to undertake the recces.
