Valleys 100 Section 10 - Tredegar to Pen y Fan Pond

Section 10 of The Valleys Hundred will take the route from the Sirhowy Valley to the Cefn Manmoel ridge and provide outstanding views of Ebbw Vale and Cwm before reaching the checkpoint at Pen y Fan Pond.

Leaving Georgetown Community Centre, the route leaves the town by following streets to arrive at a disused railway line that will take walkers south along the Sirhowy valley floor. The river will be crossed and the route will soon arrive at the hamlet of Troedrhiwgwair. Here an ascent through ancient beech trees takes place and at the top of the climb, a birdseye view of the Sirhowy Valley will be enjoyed. Looking behind from where the route has climbed will provide outstanding views of Pen y Fan and Corn Du.

The route crosses Cefn Manmoel and then follows a path that is directly on the edge of the eastern escarpment. Here the route enjoys magnificent views that may be unsurpassed on the entire route. Opposite, Mynydd Carn-y-cefn will be seen at this will be crossed on the next section of the route.

The route turns south and gently climbs over Mynydd Pen-y-fan before descending to the reservoir of Pen y Fan Pond. This reservoir was used to feed the canals that were actively used in this part of the Welsh Valleys. Checkpoint 10 will be found nearby.
