Route Description & Trackfiles (Archive 21May)

If you have found this page you are veiwing an outdated page that has been archived. Please go to this page for the final event route descriptions and remove the present page from your bookmarks.

This page provides links to the latest provisional route description documents for the main walk and the final version for the marshals walk, along with related digital mapping trackfiles. At the end, below the downloads, the planned issue of the final route description for the main event is covered along with details of the closure times for Windsor Great Park when the night route will operate. There is a separate Route Narrative document with interest information and a separate route image gallery page.

The route description has been verified and is re-issued below (as version RDMainV3a25MarEMB11pts for the main walk and a final version V3d20Apr for the marshals walk).  There are no significant alterations to the route line for either the main or marshals walk: the updates improve clarity of the description and update changes to some previous minor diversions. A final full route description will be issued again before the main event in good time for printing by entrants. Last minute updates will be dealt with via a printed sheet given to entrants on the day of the events.  The current document has been verified by a number of checkers and its quality is suitable for walking the route.  You should always check the web site to ensure that you have the latest version of the route description before setting out.  The event route on the day will use some permissive sections and the main event description covers both these and alternative public right of way (PROW) options, but on recces the PROW option must be used.

The route descriptions below are now split into the Main (2 June) and Marshals (5 May) events, with the Marshals walk version now final, for printing by entrants. The previous single document described the route both for the main and marshals events and the two separate documents avoid jumping from one paragraph to another. If printing multipage or illustrated documents please consider using the booklet option in your printer driver if it offers one. Using this with A5 page sizes and double sided printing used a quarter of the paper and ink of normal single sded printing.

You can download the updated trackfiles for the main event and the marshals event below.  These include minor updates to align the track with the route line on the ground (using GPS data along the full route). To overcome the memory limits of some GPS devices, each track has been split into two sections, e.g.  for the main event WV12gMainA and WV12gMainB.   During the night the route through Windsor Great Park cannot be used and a bypass route through Old Windsor will be activated.  Consequently the ‘B’ file has two versions, one through Windsor Great Park and a second through Old Windsor e.g. WV12gMainBGP and WV12gMainBOW.   Note that these files show the permissive routes at Beddlestead House, Belmont School and Clandon Park.  For recces the alternative right of way routes must be used, as in the route description. Similarly the marshals track files are WV12gMarshalsA, WV12gMarshalsBGP and WV12gMarshalsBOW.  Note that these files show the permissive routes at Belmont School and Clandon Park only.

The route description has precedence over the trackfiles in any cases of ambiguity.

While the route description will be checked further by the event team, comments are welcome and should be emailed to route.2012@ldwa.org.uk with details of the location and alternative wording.

There is a separate Route Narrative document with interest information commentary: the route description has minimal information on sites passed. There is a Route Gallery here, with pictures taken along or very near the route. There are access notes on the Route Summary page.

The final version, 4a, of the route description for the main event will be issued around 21 May and will be available on this webpage for printing by entrants. An event bulletin will be issued at that stage to all entrants. Those who have earlier requested posted route descriptions will have them posted. There will be some small differences from the current versions (3a); the final version will be 4a. Following a timings test on the Marshals Walk, the final route description will include the timings for the night closures of Windsor Great Park, and these will be as follows: For check point departures from the Sunningdale checkpoint (CP16 at 92.2 miles) after 1900 hours on Sunday and before 0330 hours on Monday Windsor Great Park is closed and the alternative route will operate. For check point departures before 1900 hours on Sunday and after 0330 hours on Monday Windsor Great Park is open. Entrants may also rest at the checkpoints in order to use the Great Park day route at dawn.

In addition a table of checkpoint distances, opening and closing times and ascents between checkpoints will be provided online, along with a simple list of entrants' names (except where withheld).

The event trackfiles will be updated and reissued at that stage but any differences from current version 3g will be very small and these sections will be identified on this page. Sections that may possibly be affected are at Greenwich.
