Long Distance Paths
E2
European long distance path - E2 Atlantic to Mediterranean
In September 1999 the second European long distance path, the E2, was officially opened at Kirk Yetholm, where it crosses the border between England and Scotland. The official opening ceremony, carried out by Sir John Johnson, President of the LDWA, and Jan Havelka, President of the ERA, coincided with the Annual General Meeting of the European Ramblers Association, which was being held at Ambleside that year.
On the continent E-path E2 is probably better known as the GR5, which runs from Nice, through the French Alps, Jura, Vosges, Lorraine, Luxembourg and into Belgium where it splits into two routes, just east of Antwerp. The western route heads west to Ostend, where there are ferry-links to Dover. The eastern route heads northwest to the Hook of Holland, where there are ferry-links to Harwich.
In the UK the E2 thus has two routes: (a) Dover to Stranraer and (b) Harwich to Stranraer. From Stranraer one can, via use of the Stranraer-Belfast ferry, link up with the Ulster Way in Ireland.
