| There is no set route for this, one of the ultimate walking challenges in the UK and whatever the chosen route, it will not be less than 850 miles. There are inherent dangers in using lanes/roads but there are various established long distance routes of which advantage can be taken to avoid such hazards. The LDWA/Harvey Maps Long Distance Paths Chart (still available from the LDWA Shop or Amazon online on this website or direct from Harvey Maps) and the LDWA/Blacks Long Distance Walkers' Handbook (now going out of print) are useful aids to planning the overall routing using long distance paths if footpaths are to be used. Mark Moxon's book is also available to download as an E-book or PDF. For a comprehensive bibliography of the challenge see the 'longwalks' website below. This includes reviews. An older publication from Andrew McCloy (listed) describes a walk around the coast of England & Wales (approx 2970 miles/4780 km) which provides additional alternatives in reaching the border with Scotland. John Merril's earlier classic is also still available secondhand. |
