The fourth and indeed last of the official Long Distance Routes in Scotland links the west coast at Fort William, the end of the West Highland Way, with the east coast at Inverness via the Great Glen and Loch Ness. Use is made of forestry tracks, the towpath of the Caledonian Canal and various minor lanes and tracks with very little use made of the main A82.
Due to major forestry operations, a section of the Great Glen Way between Fort Augustus and Invermoristion is closed from November 2008 to March 2009. There is no diversion and it is dangerous, and prohibited, to try to use the route between Allt na Criche and Rubha Ban.
