Hearty thanks to Wilts group for putting this on again, and it was great to hear the numbers were up dramatically on 2008. This is a great little event whose 35-mile route covers much of the same territory as the Marlborough Downs Challenge but was, I thought, better organised - a staggered start is always appreciated, even if some of the checkpoint closure times needed a little fine-tuning (common sense thankfully prevailing on the day). Indeed, with the MDC having now decided to exclude walkers from its longer (33-mile) route this makes a fine replacement. The scenery is great - with rolling gorse-covered downland, a henge, two chalk horses and a hilltop monument it was almost like an "edited highlights" package of the Dorset Giant and Wellington Boot. A nicely appropriate lead up to the Wye Forest 50 next weekend. Why, even the bluebells were out nice and early in Gopher Wood; with the sunny-but-pleasantly-breezy weather thrown in it was almost a perfect day! |
