Long Distance Walkers Association - Local Groups

East Lancashire

The East Lancashire group is one of about 40 groups around the country affiliated to the Long Distance Walkers Association. We are a friendly bunch who enjoy the social side of the club as well as the walking.

Why not look at our walks programme, see Future Events. Our main social walks are at the weekend, normally a Sunday, and these average twenty miles in length. This would take about eight hours to complete and all walkers need to carry enough food and drink to last the day. We like to visit different areas eg the West Pennine Moors, Lune Valley, Yorkshire Dales etc. Every few months we have an introductory walk for those who wish to try a longer distance but are hesitant about twenty miles. In the spring (April 2nd) there is a fifteen miles walk from Pendleton which circles Clitheroe in the lovely Ribble Valley. The theme is "Spot the Hall" At the last count there were 12 residences along this route with "Hall" in the title, come along and see if there are more! Please note that this date is different to that advertised in Strider due to a clash with the rearranged Two Crosses challenge walk. In late Summer (August 29th) there is a 14 mile walk from Burscough Bridge Railway Station which promises canals and canaries!

The group also offers Wednesday walks which are shorter in length, from about 12 to 16 miles. As part of the programme this summer we are following the Red Rose Walk in stages. This will take us across Lancashire from Uppermill in Saddleworth to Arnside on the coast. In the summer also we offer short evening walks of about five miles in and around the Bolton/Bury area. These are suitable for families; children and dogs are welcome. The 2010 evening walks are now on the website, mark the dates in your diary. You will be made very welcome on any of East Lancs walks but please telephone the walks leader beforehand to confirm the walk is taking place.

Our meetings are  very social affairs and take place at the Pack Horse Inn, Affetside, north of Bolton. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 8.00pm. Why not come along and see if you like us.

The meetings in January, May and September are when we organise the walks programme. These dates are set by the publishing schedule of Strider. All members are welcome to lead walks, in fact the more leaders, the more varied and interesting the walks programme becomes.

The meeting in November also includes the AGM which gives members the chance to have their say as to how the club is run.

I urge all members to try to attend these four meetings.

Your input is valued and important.
