Ribble Valley Walking Week

Sat 11th - Sun 19th Aug 2012

Event Details:

Event Type: Other Walking Event
Region: Northern England
Description: A week long programme of walks to mark the launch of a sustainable Long-Distance Walk to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Lancashire Witches

Local walkers have constructed a new 51-mile Lancashire Witches 400 Walk, starting in Barrowford and finishing at Lancaster Castle, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the hanging of the Lancashire Witches.

The first public walk of the route will be part of the Ribble Valley Walking Week, during 11th-19th August 2012, and will take place over 4 alternate days (12th, 14th, 16th, 18th), at a moderate pace, to make it more accessible to those who have never completed a sustainable long-distance walk before. 1/6th of the walk is in Pendle BC, half in Ribble Valley and 1/3rd in Lancaster CC. To address the hurdle common on linear walks, walkers will use special bus transport to and from the beginning and end of each day’s route, starting at Clitheroe Interchange. Booking must be made by 30th July.

The walk has been developed as part of the Lancashire Witches 400 Project (LW400) an ambitious arts programme based on the believed route the ‘witches’ took from Pendle to Lancaster, with site-specific works along it. LW 400 was created by Pete and Sue Flowers who run Green Close, a rural arts organisation based in the village of Melling. The LW400 programme runs throughout 2012, exploring the heritage of the Lancashire Witches and the 400th anniversary of their trial and subsequent execution. As well as delving into the history of Lancashire, LW400 is also delivering an extensive creative programme that includes commissioning Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy to write a special poem that will be broken down into fragments and sited along the new walking route. Full details of the extensive arts and heritage LW400 programme can be found at www.lancashirewitches400.org
