Welcome to the website for the West Lancashire Group of the
Long Distance Walkers Association
Thursday walkers on Helvellyn.
Formed some 30 years ago, our group has been thriving ever since. With a membership from a wide variety of backgrounds, we are a happy bunch, full of banter and good humour – even in the rain.
Every year we put on a balance of social walks and challenge walks.
Our social walks are done at an accommodating pace and cater for members of varying abilities. Non-members are welcome to join us, although we suggest they contact our Walks Secretary first, to check the nature of the walk. Social walks include:
- Tuesday walks of approximately 10 miles. These are held within easy driving distance of the Preston Area, which includes the West Pennine Moors, the Ribble Valley and the Bowland Hills. There are 3 or 4 of these every month.
- Twice a month we have longer walks, always listed in Strider Magazine, which range in distance from 15 to upwards of 20 miles and are described in more detail on our ‘future events’ page.
- Several of our more adventurous types go off on Thursdays, more often than not, to either the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District. Whilst these walks can be strenuous, they have much more of a focus on quality rather than quantity.
In addition to day walks, we also enjoy social walking trips away:
- In May a group head off to the Scottish Highlands, with several of their number, whilst not wanting to admit it, aspiring to join our ever growing number who have completed the Munros.
- We also endeavour to have an annual trip abroad. In recent years it has been early in the year to Southern Spain. This, of course, can vary according to popular demand and who is prepared to do the organizing.
We annually put on three challenge walks, each with a long course of approximately 24 miles and a shorter one of around 15/16 miles. We are proud to announce that, in 2011, the Group staged it’s 100th challenge event. No mean achievement!
Our ‘flagship’ event, the Anglezarke Amble, held in February, attracts entrants from all parts of the country and is always fully subscribed. Our other two challenge walks, The Barbondale Round in April/May and Bottoms Up in October cannot cater for the same numbers as the ‘Amble’ but are nevertheless very popular, with many of the same faces turning up year after year.
Our monthly meetings are in the Peter’s Bar, Bamber Bridge. Whilst much of the talk is about ‘shop’, there is a lot of lively chat and we do try our best to make them a social occasion, with slide shows of trips both of home and abroad.
Why not come and join us……if you’re a reasonably fit walker there’s sure to be something for you and what’s more……you’re bound to be made welcome.
