Event Details

The Winter Tanners is a challenge walk (or run) of circa 30miles (or 20 miles) on Surrey footpaths and bridleways with MINIMAL support in weather conditions which may be adverse. Only strong and self-reliant walkers & runners should enter. The event normally takes place on the second Sunday in January and, being a winter event, can be subject to the vagaries of winter weather. Should the need arise then any changes to the event will be posted on this site and emailed to the email address given during the on-line entry process.

Requirements Footwear & clothing suitable for a winter cross country event. Landranger 186/7 or Explorer 145/6, a mobile phone and a compass & torch if likely to finish after 1630.
Venue Parking is at Leatherhard Municipal CP TQ163566. Registration & Start is a 10 minute walk from the car park. Detailed directions of how to get from the CP to registration/start will be given in the route description. There is positively no parking at the start.
Route

New each year the route is devised by John Westcott.

A detailed route description for the forthcoming event can be downloaded here:  20 mile route : 30 mile routePlease ensure that you print off a copy of the route description before coming to the event as copies will not be routinely supplied within the entry fee.

Checkpoints There will be 2 checkpoints on the 20 mile route & 3 on the 30 mile route each providing drinks & biscuits. Participants are advised to carry spare food/drink.
Start/Finish Start: 0730 to 0930 but fast walkers must start after 0800 and runners after 0830. Finishbook in will cease at 1900 - later finishers can phone the number given on route description to record their finish time.
Results & Certificate Certificate, either on the day or by post to all who complete their chosen distance. Results will be emailed.
Entry Entry is on-line only with an event limit of 450. Positively no entries on the day. The entry fees are being held to the 2012 level of £4 LDWA and £6 non-LDWA (generally we have reviewed entry fees for Surrey Group events but have, exceptionally,  held the WT fees unchanged in recognition that we had to cancel the event last year). Under 18's MUST be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Only one LDWA rate entry per affiliate (eg Club) membership. Although the event is now full you can see the start list here. We have reintroduced a facility for entrants to make a voluntary donation to the National Trust over whose property much of the event runs.  You may care to support their efforts towards maintaining the Surrey Hills.
Conditions of Entry By entering the event you agree to the conditions of entryPlease do read these conditions carefully (they includes safety information), don’t just tick the box when you enter, We want to ensure that we minimise the risks on this tough winter event and all walkers and runners must be aware of their responsibilities as entrants and the requirements that may be checked before they are allowed to start the event.
Organiser The Winter Tanners is organised by Richard Ireson on behalf of the Surrey Group.
*Marshals Walk The Marshals Walk is only open to those who have volunteered to help on the event itself or to those contributing in some other significant way. Certificates are awarded to those successfully completing the Marshals Walk. So if you are unable to do the actual event but would like to help and thus be eligible to do the Marshals Walk please contact Tony Cartwright.
