Congleton Edge - EW (21/06/2011)
For this evening walk, some of the old stalwarts were joined by Sheena on her first time out with the group, prospective member Colin, and Dora & Keith from Staffordshire group. At 7.20, we set off from the Castle Inn, across Biddulph Road, to turn off up Biddulph Street, continuing along the path to Congleton Edge Road. Straight across, and we were on the old trackway running below the Edge, past Edge Hill, Heather Bank & Castle Farms. Continuing along Puddle Bank Lane, we passed Hillside Farm, then turned uphill beside the wooded stream, then across a couple of fields to cross Mow Lane. A couple more fields, and we were onto open pasture; finally, past a herd of bemused Highland cattle, we reached Corda Well and the ridgetop road near Cheshire's Close.
Here, Avril, David, Jean & Steve opted to head back to the pub. The rest continued, through the woods above Roepark Farm and past the Old Man of Mow to Mow Cop Castle. Returning to Cheshire's Close by the back lanes, we continued along the road then along a driveway to the overgrown ridgetop path to Pot Bank. Continuing along the bridleway, we reached Nick i' th' Hill, then continued along the wooded summit of Congleton Edge, returning to the Castle at 9.50.
