Newsletter - July 2013

DERWENT WATER FROM BLENCATHRA

This is the Group’s latest Newsletter and as usual it will also be placed on our web site. Events that have occurred since the last edition are detailed below and reports of each are on the website. The Secretary would be most grateful to receive any contributions for future editions.

Membership is nominally at 30 though there are several members we rarely see now.

A warm welcome is extended to new member Una Wood who has joined recently.

Derek is standing down as Walks Secretary so this important post needs to be filled as soon as possible. Thanks are due to him for his hard work in providing us with interesting walks and leaders over the last few years – not an easy task!

Any offers or nominations will be welcome preferably before the AGM.

This year’s AGM is planned for Sunday 27th October at the Coledale Inn, Braithwaite. It will follow the usual format of a meeting and meal following the monthly social walk. More details will follow in due course.

There has been an initial tentative approach from our neighbouring Groups ie Westmorland & N.Lancs and Morecambe Bay & Bowland to discuss the possibility of an eventual merger. All three Groups are suffering from similar problems of an ageing and declining active membership and it may be that a merger may help to arrest or slow down this trend.

No doubt there will be an interesting debate at the AGM.

The ninth Three Rings of Shap took place on 15th June and was the best supported yet. There were 152 starters out of 171 entries. A record 55 completed the full Event with the remainder enjoying one or two Rings. The weather was a lot kinder than the previous year with heavy rain being confined to a couple of hours on the Saturday evening.

Next year will be the tenth running of the Event and is scheduled for the weekend of 14/15th June 2014. The organising team will be retiring after a decade of hard work so new blood will be needed to ensure it continues. Again prospective volunteers will be welcome before or at the AGM.

The Away Weekend this year is scheduled for 26-30th September on the St. Cuthberts Way.

Anyone interested should contact Jim Crockett as soon as possible.

Last year’s route took in the Yoredale Way and was enjoyed by four members. Thanks are due to Jim for organising it.

Suggestions for a route for 2014 would be welcome either now or at the AGM.
