To Helwith & Back

To Helwith & Back - Saturday August 11th 2012

Todays walk was one of our monthly shorter walks to encourage those walkers who do not normally do long distance walking, 13 walkers turned out at Reeth, we were rewarded with perfect walking conditions and had fantastic views all day, with plenty of stops for phtot shots, it seemed everyone had a camera with them.

We visited several small dales and gills from the main Swaledale with a few remote hamlets along the way.  At Hurst we had the option of two routes a 15mile or 16.5miles, everyone opted for the longer route which included a hairy steep descent from the lead workings at Fell End Lead mine to the dale bottom for a pleasant walk along the river back to Reeth, along the way we had great photo opportunity of a new born calf with its mother.

We arrived back at Reeth at approximately 4.00pm having walked 16.5miles with over 3000'ascent.  It was encouraging that the make up of the group were regular long distance walkers and others who wouldn't normally attempt long distances.  Everyone finished in good spirits, looking forward to the next walk - " A window on High Cup"
