Environmental Policy Statement
The LDWA's objectives, laid down in the Constitution, include 'To assist in the preservation and enhancement of the beauty of the countryside and preservation of public access to open country'. With this in mind, and following discussion at the 2011 AGM, the National Committee have adopted the following Environmental Policy Statement. They are grateful to Carol Coyne for advice in compiling the statement.
'Walking for pleasure is dependent on the continued existence of the UK's unique diverse landscape. This landscape is under pressure from competing human demands that can jeopardise the sustainability of wildlife and habitats. Although walking has a relatively low environmental impact, the LDWA recognises its part in maintaining the integrity and beauty of the areas we walk in to ensure these continue to be accessible to future generations. The LDWA acknowledges it has a responsibility to minimise the impact of the Association's activities on the environment. This is achieved in a number of ways:
- The LDWA aims to ensure the Association's rules and published guidance is consistent with our Environmental Policy Statement, the principles of respect for the environment and the preservation of wildlife and habitats.
- The LDWA aims to work in partnership with landowners, government authorities and peer organisations in defining and achieving best practice sustainability.
- The LDWA will comply with all relevant legislation related to environmental protection, maintain the principle of litter-free walking and take proper measures to minimise pollution and waste.
